Step 1: Pre-Operation Preparation
Clean the System: Remove old grain, debris, and dust from the dryer, bins, and augers. This prevents fire hazards and contamination.
Inspect the Machine: Check belts, chains, motors, and electrical connections. Ensure all safety guards are in place.
Check the Fuel: If it's a heated air dryer, verify that there is enough propane, natural gas, or oil.
Test the Controls: Turn on the system to ensure fans, augers, and temperature controls are functioning properly.
Step 2: Setting the Parameters
Measure Initial Moisture: Test the moisture content of the incoming grain using a reliable moisture meter.
Determine Target Moisture: Set the desired final moisture percentage (typically 13-15% for long-term storage of corn, wheat, or soybeans, depending on your region and storage duration).
Step 3: Operation
Start the System: Turn on the unloading augers and fans first to establish airflow and prevent overheating.
Introduce Grain: Begin filling the dryer with wet grain.
For Batch Dryers: Fill to the proper level, then allow the drying cycle to complete before unloading.
For Continuous Flow Dryers: Grain will automatically flow through the machine as it dries.
Monitor Temperature: Keep an eye on the grain temperature. Overheating can damage the grain (cracking, reducing germination, or scorching for feed).
Check Moisture Frequently: Take samples from the outlet.
Step 4: Cooling (If Applicable)
If the grain was dried with high heat, it must be cooled before storage to prevent spoilage.
Run the cooling cycle until the grain temperature is within 10–15°F of the outside ambient air temperature.
Step 5: Shutdown and Cleaning
Empty the Dryer: Run all remaining grain out of the system.
Cool Down the Dryer: Let the fans run for a few minutes after the grain is out to cool the internal components.
